This small tree is known as both Michelia champaca and Magnolia champaca. It is a small evergreen tree Magnolia, native to South Asia. The slender glossy green leaves are highlighted by yellow-orange flowers produced.
It is known for its mustard yellow/orange flowers which are strongly fragrant and bloom from summer to autumn. The flowers have been used for worship at temples, as a beauty ornament and natural perfume. The essence of the flower has been used to make fragrant oils and is one of the main ingredients in the perfume ‘Joy’ by Jean Patou; the most expensive perfume in the world.
The tree prefers medium well-drained soil in a sunny position. It is resistant to frost but does not care for drought.
