A large form of the common ‘Bird of Paradise’ (Strelitzia reginae), with similar shaped white flowers however, it won’t produce these for many years. They grow around 6m tall and are very hardy and drought tolerant. Their foliage is similar in appearance to banana palms and traveller palms (Ravenala madagascariensis).
Strelitzia nicolai prefer rich, moist well draining soil and are comfortable in full sun to part shade. They have invasive roots which should be considered before planting near buildings, however it is commonly used as an indoor plant preferably in a well-lit spot.
